Clairvaux was designed for Linotype in 1990 by Herbert Maring as part of the Type Before Gutenberg series. This blackletter typeface is based on quill-drawn letters from thirteenth-century manuscripts, although the letterforms are simpler than typical blackletters. Bernard of Clairvaux was one of the eleventh-century founders of the Cistercian Order of Benedictine monks.
