I had a lot of fun designing chess fonts in 1994. Chessterton has two whimsical chess fonts. The key layout is a little complicated. To get a piece on a black square, one must use two characters, one for the piece and another that has no width for the blackground. I wrote a little program for the Macintosh to help set up keyboards several years ago, and if you search for ChessEdit on the internet, you may still find a copy. In addition to making chess boards, some of the pieces make interesting decorations.
