Founded by Samuel Nelson Dickinson in Boston in 1839. In 1872, after the business had been ravaged by a fire, he made his skilled punchcutter, Alexander Phemister, a partner. The foundry became part of ATF in 1891. Two Dickinson employees, Joseph W. Phinney and Robert W. Nelson, became leading figures in ATF.
