Some like it hot. Others play it cool, clean and laid way back. You say Soap looks familiar? Sure, it looks a bit like Cooper Black but Soap is much more. It’s so slick lowercase won’t even stick to it. And check out the top of the C and G. That’s a beautiful thing. Soap’s numerals line up with the capitals making it right-on for t-shirts and titles. Soap has real tight spacing for that pseudo-seventies look. Groovy dingbats? Soap’s got ‘em.

It’s 1984 and everything has sideburns. Shoulder-padded “dress for success” is in, with power suits for women, black and white layers for men, neon brights for the youngsters. Maggie’s “enemy within” and “no society” speeches preface the arrival of shopping malls and corporate status symbols. The economy is a philosophy and accountants carry ambiguous but very sophisticated-sounding titles. Thousands of words and expressions are reduced to initials or monosyllabic sounds. Synthesizers are very refined and the music is very catchy. The Macintosh and MTV are making waves. Brands are lifestyles. “Yuppy,” Yummy," “Bobo,” “Dinky” and “Woopie” are standard consumer categories in advertising lingo. The Volkswagen identity, only 5 years old now, is all the rage in design. VAG Rundschrift, by all appearances a rounded and slightly condensed Futura, is everywhere. Tube design is king.

My favorite scene is when John Travolta bumps into Sylvester Stallone in the beginning of the film. Just look at this typeface and think...“You could be dancing, YEAH!”.

Type designer Luc(as) de Groot has a large archive of lettering he drew by hand, often to accompany the quirky cartoons which he made in his visual diaries. Only a few of these alpahabets have been digitized into full-fledged typefaces. Punten (Dutch for “points” or “spikes”) is one of them. It comes in three styles of varying legibility: Punten Straight, Punten Extremo, and Punten Rondom (Dutch for “all around”).

Amity is a unicase type design in the spirit of Bayer Universal and its 1970’s child, Bauhaus. The lower case combines capital and lower case letterforms in a slick, inherently chuckable set led by a bespoke monocular “a”. An upper case of lining “capitals” compliment the lower case. The deftly-worked-out modular structure, employing quarter rounds and the seldom-used principle of overhead underhang, ensures great fit with very little need of kerning—most letters are strictly lining and occupy a square footprint.

Glow Gothic BF, like its predecessor Subliminal BF, represents further exploration into typographic special effects. In its original form, it features letters that are transparent, with an opaque glow. Glow Gothic Overlay and Glow Gothic Underlay share identical spacing values and are designed to be used together. Though “Overlay” can certainly be employed as a separate, stand-alone, solid font, using these two together allows for greater color and (tighter) kerning possibilities —see Gallery Images.

In the early 1990s, while working on Thesis, Luc(as) drew several display faces which were based on the shapes of TheSans but were either de(con)structive versions or experimental variations.

Macrame Super Triline is the naughty sister of Macrame. It comes with lots of design alternatives for example The upper case S has an extra bit of flourish while the lower case s fits nicely between other letters. It’s an almost unicase font but you can also choose non unicase versions of the p, b and d for better readibility. This font contains the Euro symbol, just use the currency symbol key stroke!
