German typographer, type designer and teacher. After studying in Berlin, in 1900, with F.H. Ehmcke and F.W. Kleukens, he set up the Steglitzer Werkstatt. He taught at the Kunstgewerbschule in Berlin, and headed the typography department at the Leipzig Academy of Graphic Design and Book Arts.
