Paul Standard

Geometry can produce legible letters, but art alone makes them beautiful. Art begins where geometry ends, and imparts to letters a character transcending mere measurement.

New York-based calligrapher and expert on chancery script. Author of the much-admired Calligraphy’s Flowering, Decay and Restauration (Society of Typographic Arts Chicago, 1947).

In 1983 he was awarded the TDC Medal, the award from the Type Directors Club presented to those “who have made significant contributions to the life, art, and craft of typography”.
