In typographic circles north of the equator, these past few months will probably go down in history as the Summer of Scripts. Never before has such a rich crop of pointed pen strokes, cunning connections and stunning swashes graced our newsletters. But right now … maybe it’s our users’ reaction to all this opulence, maybe it’s the time of year: these past few weeks we have seen something of a renaissance of the practical and the legible. Which is why this edition of Rising Stars marks a return to good old sans and serif faces — for body text, for display or both (with one pomologically baroque exception). Enjoy.
elcome to our June newsletter — another Rising Stars dominated by script fonts. A script font is like a personal voice, and if you want to impersonate different kinds of talkers — solemn or cheeky, bubbly or sloppy — you may want to put together an entire collection of them. With the affordable prices many foundries offer, that’s what a lot of our users do. They have discovered that collecting fonts can be fun! Of course, some fonts are more sophisticated than others; so if you want to add a classy touch to your work, don’t forget to look beyond the basic font samples. Many fonts have a downloadable PDF that you can zoom into to check if the curves are smooth enough for your taste. Enjoy!
August is a special month. The whole of Italy is on holiday, and so is most of Paris. Hippies and artists across the US and beyond are getting ready for Burning Man. Elsewhere, we’re enjoying gorgeous summer weekends while slowly getting re-adjusted to the working rhythm. Type-wise, the world looks pretty sunny too. Lots of great new alphabets on our Hot New Fonts list, from foundries old and new. Here’s a selection of the month’s most popular fonts.
This quarter brings us a very impressive number of designers and foundries new to MyFonts, and releases from many already-established MyFonts designers.
