Just like the M.C. Escher impossible figures and optical illusions, “Denedo” is a font that is impossible to construct in three dimensions because it only exists as a drawing. This font is based on the “0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9” characters of one of the alphabets published by Nedo Mion Ferrario in the “Letromaquia” exhibition that was shown in Caracas, Venezuela in the 70’s.

Father’s Day, or June 17 of this year, is in the middle of Argentinian winter. And like people do on wintery Sunday mornings, I was bundled up in bed with too many covers, pillows and comforters. Feeling good and not thinking about anything in particular, Father’s Day was nowhere in the vicinity of my mind. My eleven year old son, Matías, came into the room with a handmade present for me. Up to this point, my Father’s Day gift history was nothing unusual. Books, socks, hand-painted wooden spoons, the kind of thing any father would expect from his pre-teen son. So you can understand when I say I was bracing myself to fake excitement at my son’s present.

Golden Ticket is a digitization of hand-drawn poster lettering by Otto Heim from 1925. The regular style is meant to be used on its own, but the other three styles are meant to be used one on top of another in three different colors to create a 3D effect. For best results, put the base style on the bottom, with the fill style directly on top of that in a different color, and the highlight style directly on top of that in a third color.

Sibyl is a beautiful display letter rich in structure, sumptuous in finish, and exquisitely detailed throughout. What amounts to a rarity among rarities—an inline schwabacher—required many hours study of traditional schwabacher fonts. The resulting Sibyl type hews much closer to authentic schwabacher forms than its “scanned and fonted” progenitor, the Verzierte Schwabacher designed by Carl Kloberg, 1891.

Busted is the very strange and out-of-character outburst of Bill Troop, a guy who was classically trained in everything, from classical piano and literature to classical photography and type design. As far as we could tell, Bill Troop is the kind of guy whose appearance and voice instantly trigger thoughts of black and white photos, fedoras, and pre-industrial age Europe. A few years ago, he even moved from the United States to England, where it took him less than a week to feel at home and start sounding like a Norwich native. Synthesizers are very refined and the music is very catchy. The Macintosh and MTV are making waves. Brands are lifestyles. “Yuppy,” Yummy," “Bobo,” “Dinky” and “Woopie” are standard consumer categories in advertising lingo. The Volkswagen identity, only 5 years old now, is all the rage in design. VAG Rundschrift, by all appearances a rounded and slightly condensed Futura, is everywhere. Tube design is king.

Shababa is a hand-drawn 3-D font. The linework is still kept fairly relaxed, mostly smooth with some distressed edges. There is lots of texturing from the pen strokes which becomes more evident at larger point sizes. This looseness enhances the smooth technicality of the properly extruded forms.
