XSF, standing for eXcellent Screen Fonts, is Linotype’s term to indicate that a font works very well on screen at small sizes in terms of legibility and aesthetics. Font engineers use TrueType “hints” to achieve ideal pixel arrangements for each letter at each small size. Most system fonts on Windows and Apple OS X have undergone similar treatment. Monotype’s term for the same technique is ESQ.
