The Player family started as a straight-forward revival of a film face called Ivy League, an early 1970s VGC classic that was very popular with designers of sports paraphernalia. A few hundred liters of coffee later, the revival of a single condensed font has become an 11-font ambitious attempt at being the last word in athletic lettering.

The distinguishing characteristics of the serif Clearface familythe slight serifs atop A, and at the stroke ends of V and W; the curves of k and y; the slanted bar of e; and the open 4are apparent in its companion, Clearface Gothic. Both were designed by Morris Fuller Benton for American Type Founders and released between the years 1907 and 1910. Clearface Gothic is also a legibility typeface and, therefore, is most distinguished when used for text.

Antique Olive was designed by Roger Excoffon for the French typefoundry, Olive, which it issued in different weights and widths from 1962 to 1966. In France, antique is the generic term for sans serif designs. Antique Olive was initially designed to rival the popular sans serifs Helvetica and Univers, but is almost humanistic in its design approach, with no indication of a mechanical look. Although the x-height is large and the ascenders and descenders are short, the design maintains an elegant, statuesque quality. Antique Olive is a distinctive typeface that can be used in a variety of ways, from text work to display.

OverKill Bloque was created in 1991 as a banner logo for a gamers fan newsletter, The OVERKILL Casualty Report. As letterforms were built for various headlines, a font took shape. Just for grins I fleshed out an uppercase and numbers and named it Ultra Bold. Much later, when Mike and I were working on our chiseled race pak, Ultra Bold convexed nicely and fit in with the modern sports look of the font pak. Mike is most at fault for the lowercase! No face should be without a lowercase! Since then, OverKill / Ultra-Bold has made its way onto the covers of two comic books and numerable vehicles and signs. In 2008 I decided to make it more useful for the desktop crowd. I brought back the OverKill name and called the first font in the family, OverKill Bloque.
