Grunge fonts – whether messy, illegible or distressed – rudely reject the finer aspects of typography. In the early 1990s, just as grunge music reacted against the synthesized pop of the 1980s, young type designers rebelled against anodyne desktop publishing and, reveling in the freedom offered by Fontographer, produced fonts that reminded us that computer typesetting need not be all about digital perfection.
