Some fonts offer a range of variants designed for use at specific sizes. For example, a variant designed for use at large headline or “display” sizes might incorporate thin lines and fine details that are likely to disappear if scaled down to smaller text sizes.
The practice comes from the days of punchcutting and hand-set movable type, when fonts were designed to be cast in metal at a specific size.
