When Baka and Baka Too did very well commercially (Baka was named the Best Cursive Rough Script in 2005), I shied away from doing rough, handwritten scripts in fear as being seen as a one-trick-pony. A few years have passed and some early sumi-e brush ‘doodles’ kept appealing to me. I initially thought this new font would just fall under the Baka mantle and just become a new sibling, but as brush hit paper over and over again, the letters took on a different personality from Baka.

Pretorian: a late seventies Victorian revival which spread across the low-end design world like a chichi wildfire. Pretorian’s flowery flame burned brightly for a solid decade. If you’re looking for a vintage t-shirt font which truly embodies the spirit of the eighties, Reagan is it. If you buy the OpenType format and use an application which properly supports OpenType fonts, custom letter pairs will magically wedge themselves into position to reduce repetition and properly recreate that ostentatious, eighties t-shirt feeling.

OverKill Bloque was created in 1991 as a banner logo for a gamers fan newsletter, The OVERKILL Casualty Report. As letterforms were built for various headlines, a font took shape. Just for grins I fleshed out an uppercase and numbers and named it Ultra Bold. Much later, when Mike and I were working on our chiseled race pak, Ultra Bold convexed nicely and fit in with the modern sports look of the font pak. Mike is most at fault for the lowercase! No face should be without a lowercase! Since then, OverKill / Ultra-Bold has made its way onto the covers of two comic books and numerable vehicles and signs. In 2008 I decided to make it more useful for the desktop crowd. I brought back the OverKill name and called the first font in the family, OverKill Bloque.
