Serifs are the little strokes that appear on the ends of the main strokes in many typefaces, mimicking the traces of brush and chisel with which letters were once made. Until the late 19th century, virtually all typefaces used serifs. Serif fonts (or seriffed fonts) are still generally regarded as better for long printed texts, and hence most books and newspapers use serif fonts.
