Transitional is a term sometimes used to refer to the typefaces of Baskerville and Caslon, among others. The transition in question is that from the oldstyle or humanist tradition, started by Jenson in the late 15th century, to the so-called modern designs of Didot and Bodoni in the late 18th century.
