I searched all over the internet looking for a realistic sand writing font and came away empty handed. Undaunted by this, I grabbed my business partner, Mary and trekked down to our local river, the Arkansas (pronounced ar-KAN-sas around here). Using sticks, we scratched out the entire alphabet in the sand, including upper & lowercase, and punctuation marks! I photographed the characters, converted them to line art on my computer and used font creating software to turn it into a true type font!

Cooper Black is a very heavy version of Cooper Oldstyle (also known simply as Cooper), an innovative typeface with rounded serifs and long ascenders designed in 1919. The Cooper family was the work of Oswald Bruce Cooper, co-owner of the Bertsch & Cooper design firm in Chicago. Cooper Black was first released by the Barnhart Brothers & Spindler foundry of Chicago in 1922. Oz Cooper was fond of saying that the Black fit the needs of “far-sighted printers with near-sighted customers.” Cooper Black set a trend in ad types which prompted such designers as Fred Goudy (one of Cooper’s early teachers) to follow suit with their own black faces (compare Goudy Heavyface).

A marvelous idea for a font inspired by the stenciled lettering on imported merchandise containers. Chinese Rocks looks like it was made by a hand cut rubber stamp, used about a million times. Uneven line thickness and odd stem widths combined with sharp corners give the effect of having been cut out with a box knife in a hurry. It ain't pretty but it sure gets the message across.

Antique Olive was designed by Roger Excoffon for the French typefoundry, Olive, which it issued in different weights and widths from 1962 to 1966. In France, “antique” is the generic term for sans serif designs. Antique Olive was initially designed to rival the popular sans serifs Helvetica and Univers, but is almost humanistic in its design approach, with no indication of a mechanical look. Although the x-height is large and the ascenders and descenders are short, the design maintains an elegant, statuesque quality. Antique Olive is a distinctive typeface that can be used in a variety of ways, from text work to display.

Cherubim are most frequently represented as small angels, children with wings, with chubby faces and rosy cheeks. This is called an artistic convention. It is not based on an historical or theological research, but merely on the fact that human beings want cherubs to look cute. So artists make them look cute.
